Club Champion Build vs. OEM

Club Champion Build vs. OEM

Key Takeaways

  • A world-class fitting only produces results if the clubs built afterward actually match the specifications the data identified — that gap is where most of the industry falls short.
  • OEM manufacturing tolerances allow loft and lie deviations of 2-3 degrees and length variations of half an inch or more — Club Champion builds to within 1 degree of loft/lie and 1/8 inch of length.
  • Every Club Champion club is built start-to-finish by a single Master Builder using machines calibrated to match the fitting bay — no handoffs, no tolerance drift.
  • SST PURing aligns every shaft's Neutral Axis for maximum stability — ensuring the shaft you were fit in performs identically in the finished club.
  • The 90-day Perfect Fit Guarantee backs every build: if your clubs don't deliver the results you saw in the fitting bay, Club Champion makes it right.

Introduction

I built Club Champion around a simple but uncompromising belief: that every detail of the process matters. Not just the fitting. Not just the technology. Every detail — from the first swing on TrackMan to the moment a finished club passes quality control and ships to its new owner. Because golf is a game of inches, and the smallest discrepancies compound into strokes.

Most golfers understand, at least in principle, that a fitting makes a difference. What far fewer understand is that a fitting only produces results if the clubs that come out of the build process actually match the specifications the data identified. A perfect fitting followed by a loosely built set of clubs is not a perfect outcome. It is a promise broken somewhere between the fitting bay and the first tee.

That gap — between what was fitted and what was built — is where most of the golf industry operates. And closing it completely is what defines the Club Champion difference.

"The tolerances for mass-produced clubs are all over the place. With a professionally built club like those we create, one person does the build from start to finish, following much tighter tolerances — and the result is a club that actually performs to spec."

— Nick Sherburne, Founder, Club Champion

Why OEM Manufacturing Tolerances Are Not Designed for Your Swing

When a major equipment manufacturer builds clubs for retail, they are building for scale. Millions of units, assembled in high-volume facilities, often on assembly lines where different workers handle different stages of production. The result is efficient and impressive for mass production. It is not designed for precision at the individual level.

The tolerance windows for OEM-manufactured clubs reflect that reality. Industry-standard acceptable ranges include loft and lie deviations of two to three degrees, length variations of half an inch or more, and meaningful swingweight differences across a set. Two degrees of loft in a 7-iron changes carry distance and trajectory meaningfully. A half-inch of length variation changes the lie angle at impact and the club's effective flex. A swingweight delta across a set breaks the consistency of feel and timing you rely on to repeat your swing.

Build SpecificationOEM / Mass Production vs. Club Champion
Loft and lie OEM: +/- 2-3 degrees
Club Champion: +/- 1 degree
Club length OEM: +/- 1/2 inch or more

Club Champion: SST PUREd — Neutral Axis aligned
Build responsibility OEM: assembly line, multiple workers
Club Champion: single builder, start to finish
Machine calibration OEM: build shop machines may not match fitting bay
Club Champion: fitting bays synced to centralized build shop

The Hidden Problem: Your Fitting Data Goes Somewhere Else

Here is a scenario most golfers do not consider when they get fitted. You work with a skilled fitter, generate accurate TrackMan data, identify the right shaft, head, loft, lie, and swingweight for your swing. Then the order is placed — and it goes to a manufacturer's custom shop to be assembled.

That manufacturer's custom shop has its own machines, its own calibration standards, its own build team. The loft and lie machine they use to bend irons may not be calibrated the same way as the machine in the fitting studio. The result is that the club you hit in the fitting bay — the one that produced the best data of your life — and the club that arrives in the mail three weeks later are not guaranteed to be the same club.

This is not a criticism of manufacturers. They build excellent products. But the chain of precision from fitting data to finished club passes through too many hands and too many different machines to guarantee continuity. At Club Champion, we closed that gap by design.

The Club Champion Build Process: Where Precision Becomes Physical

Every order is built in our centralized build shop — a highly specialized facility staffed by full-time Master Builders. Not a manufacturer's facility. Not a third-party assembly house. One Master Builder takes ownership of your order from start to finish, building every club to the specifications our fitters identified — on machines perfectly calibrated to match the ones in the fitting bay.

Build StepWhat Happens
1. Weight-sorted component selection Components are hand-picked from thousands of options in our centralized build shop — sorted by weight to ensure every club in the set performs consistently.
2. SST PURE shaft alignment Every shaft is run through the SST PURE machine, which identifies the Neutral Axis — the most stable bending plane. The shaft is installed in the clubhead aligned to that axis.
3. Single-builder ownership All components for a golfer's build are assigned to one Master Builder, who sees the build from start to finish — no handoffs, no assembly-line fragmentation.
4. Length, preparation and grip installation Shafts are measured, cut, and sanded to exact length. The grip is installed and aligned to the PURE position — consistent across every club in the set.
5. Digital swingweight calibration Swingweight is measured and matched to the fitting specification using digital, calibrated machines — the same technology used in the fitting bay.
6. 24-hour epoxy bonding A ferrule is chosen and the assembly is glued using 24-hour strongest-bond epoxy. PURE position and grip alignment are verified once more before the club goes to the drying rack.
7. Precision loft and lie bending Once epoxy is fully cured, ferrules are sanded to perfection. Clubs are bent to precise loft and lie measurements using digital machines calibrated to match those in the fitting studio.
8. Quality control and shipping Clubs are cleaned, polished, and inspected against their full build specification by a dedicated Quality Control team before being shipped.

Why Swingweight, Loft, and Lie Are Not Interchangeable

Golfers sometimes wonder whether these tolerances actually matter in practice. The answer is yes — and they compound across a set in ways that are not immediately obvious.

Consider swingweight first: swingweight changes flex. A heavier swingweight makes the shaft play looser; a lighter swingweight makes the shaft play stiffer. If you were fitted for a specific flex and the club ships with a swingweight that is off by two or three points, the shaft is not performing the way it performed during the fitting. The launch angle, spin rate, and feel you experienced in the bay will not match what you feel on the course.

Loft is even more direct. Two degrees of loft on a 7-iron is the difference between the launch and carry you optimized for and a club that launches too high or too low. Across a full set with OEM tolerances, you can end up with irons that have inconsistent carry gaps. Lie angle affects impact geometry: a lie angle that is one degree flat or upright changes where the sole contacts the turf and where the face points at impact.

"Golf is in the details. Every variable in the build affects another. Swingweight changes flex. Loft changes trajectory. Lie changes direction. These are not minor adjustments — they are the difference between a club that performs to spec and one that quietly costs you strokes."

— Nick Sherburne, Founder, Club Champion

What This Means for Your Scores

The question every golfer ultimately cares about is: does this translate to lower scores? The answer is yes — and the mechanism is consistency. Golf improvement is not about hitting one perfect shot; it is about understanding your misses and trusting your equipment to perform predictably enough that you can make adjustments based on your swing, not based on equipment variance.

When every club in your bag is built to the same standard — the same swingweight, the same relative flex, consistent loft gaps, and SST PUREd shafts returning to the same position at impact — you develop a reliable feedback loop between your swing and the ball. You know what your 7-iron does. You know your miss. You know how to play for it. That clarity is worth strokes, and it is not something you can buy off a rack.

World-Class Fit. World-Class Build. The Club Champion Difference.

Most fitting companies stop at step one. They fit you well, recommend the right equipment — and then hand the build off to someone else. The chain of precision breaks the moment the order leaves their control. Club Champion is designed so that chain never breaks.

From the first data point on TrackMan to the final quality check before your clubs ship, every step is owned, measured, and accountable to the same standard. Third-party studies, internal data, and the feedback of thousands of fitted golfers all point to the same conclusion: a world-class fit followed by a world-class build produces results that a fitting alone — or a buy-off-the-rack experience — simply cannot match.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SST PURing and why does it matter for my clubs?

SST PURing is a process that spin-tests every shaft to identify its Neutral Axis — the most stable bending plane around the shaft's circumference. Because every shaft has natural inconsistencies in its flex across its 360-degree profile, installing a shaft without aligning its Neutral Axis means some portion of that variance is baked into every swing. When the shaft is PUREd and installed aligned to its Neutral Axis, you get the most consistent, stable shaft performance possible — shot to shot, round to round. Club Champion SST PUREs every shaft in every build.

How does Club Champion's build tolerance compare to buying off the rack?

OEM manufacturing tolerances allow loft and lie deviations of plus or minus 2-3 degrees, length variations of half an inch or more, and meaningful swingweight differences that are often unchecked. Club Champion builds to within 1 degree of loft and lie, 1/8 inch of length, and 1 swingweight point — verified by digital machines calibrated to match the fitting bay. For a golfer who has been precisely fitted, the difference between OEM tolerances and Club Champion tolerances is the difference between a club that performs to spec and one that quietly underperforms.

What is the Perfect Fit Guarantee and how does it work?

The 90-day Perfect Fit Guarantee means that if your Club Champion-built clubs do not deliver the results you saw in the fitting bay, you come back within 90 days and Club Champion makes it right — no fine print, no exceptions. This is the only guarantee of its kind in the golf fitting industry. It reflects Club Champion's confidence in both the fitting process and the build quality, and it ensures the golfer is not left holding equipment that underperforms.
